Mount the status bar in the notch of the Xiaomi Mi 8 / Mi 8 SE with this mod
One of the greatest things about our forums is that developers and users can offer fixes to some of the original software annoyances. Sometimes it’s by disabling a feature, fixing a bug, or maybe making a small cosmetic change, which is exactly what a user has done for the Xiaomi Mi 8 and Xiaomi Mi 8 SE. The problem on these devices is that the status bar is shorter than the notch, so the screen’s top panel looks a bit odd when the screen is on.
Since you don’t need root or a custom ROM to install custom overlays on Android Oreo, a forum member was able to resolve the issue. XDA senior member ztc1997 created an overlay for the Xiaomi Mi 8 and Xiaomi Mi 8 SE that matches the status bar in the notch area. All you have to do is install the APK file and then activate it with an ADB command to make the status bar the same size as the notch so it looks a lot better. Keep in mind that this fix only works for Android 8.0 Oreo and Android 8.1 Oreo because Android 9 Pie prevents the installation of custom overlays. Here are some before and after screenshots of the fix, courtesy of sacca25.
Instructions for installing the overlay and the overlay APKs can be found in the respective threads below. In the future, this mod will not help you on the Android 9 Pie version of Mi 8 which has just been released in beta form in China. However, it will work on the latest stable MIUI 10 version of the Mi 8, as it is based on Android 8.1 Oreo. Take advantage of this little fix while you can!
