Injury, suspension list against Tottenham

Sports Mole provides an update on all the latest Chelsea injury and suspension news ahead of their EFL Cup semi-final second leg with Tottenham Hotspur.

Chelsea are expected to return to action on Wednesday night when they face off Tottenham Hotspur in the second stage of their EFL Cup semi final.

The Blues dominated the first leg at Stamford Bridge, a Kai havertz first goal followed by an own goal Ben davies to establish a 2-0 advantage.

However, while he was able to rest many players against Chesterfield this weekend, the head coach Thomas tuchel still grapples with several selection issues.

James suffered a hamstring injury against Brighton & Hove Albion last month, and although the club have yet to set a deadline for his recovery he will not be available here.

Mendy has now partnered with Senegal’s side for the Africa Cup of Nations and will not be available for Chelsea while his country takes part in the tournament. The goalkeeper also recently tested positive for coronavirus.

Chalobah suffered a recurrence of his hamstring injury in the second half against Liverpool on January 2, and it seems highly unlikely that he will feature on Wednesday.

Possible return date: January 12 (vs Spurs)

While Silva has been ruled out from the last two matches due to coronavirus, it was suggested over the weekend that he had already tested negative. However, protocols prevent him from resuming training until Tuesday at the earliest, leaving his participation highly uncertain.

Possible return date: January 12 (vs Spurs)

Kanté finds himself under the same constraints as Silva, without having tested negative. Although a start in this game seems unlikely, a place on the substitutes’ bench cannot be ruled out.
