Britt Baker is on top of the wrestling world. She returned to Pittsburgh – affectionately Brittsburgh to her fans – to defend her AEW (All Elite Wrestling) Women’s World Championship, and she took the time to talk about her status as the most prominent actor in professional wrestling.

***

As I prepared our interview spot from the press box at the top of the Petersen Events Center at the University of Pittsburgh, it looked like a rock concert was going on downstairs. Britt and I sat down and watched the AEW team put together what would be the centerpiece of the week’s two events: Dynamite and Rampage’s debut.

I was caught up in the buzz surrounding her and it made me wonder: is she still horny every time she sees the ring – her stage – being built, especially in this building, in his hometown?

“It’s done!” she exclaimed, looking at the jumble of equipment. “It’s so crazy. Entering this building makes it all very real to me. I can’t even guess how many times I was here between 2014 and 2018. I had my DMD across the street (University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine) and this is the building in which I studied. There is an atrium downstairs with a cafe where I practically lived. I was here all the time.

Britt was born near Punxsutawney, about 90 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, but she is clearly a Yinzer. She grew up loving all of Pittsburgh’s sports teams, bleeding black and gold and cheering on her Steelers, Pirates and Penguins. But she was also interested in other sports, especially professional wrestling, during her teenage years.

“I really got into wrestling in high school and college,” she said. “My friends would come in and we would watch the pay-per-views together. I was really passionate about it, I loved watching it, but I hadn’t thought of doing it at the time.

Everything changed when she moved to Pittsburgh.

After high school, Britt attended Penn State University, where she earned a degree in behavioral medicine with a minor in Human Development and Family Studies. Then his attention turned to dentistry.

“When I was moving to Pittsburgh to go to dental school, a few friends told me about the big independent wrestling scene here,” she said. “I only knew about wrestling that I saw on TV, like WWE, but I started to research a bit more and found this local school called IWC. Turns out they did some testing that week and I thought I was going to check it out, just to see what it looked like. But as soon as I got in the ring, as soon as I hit the ropes, I wanted to do it. I decided from then on that I was going to be a wrestler and a dentist.

This move meant pursuing two full-time careers, which for most people is not a viable option. For Britt, however, it was about digging deep and staying in the moment.

“It was exhausting,” she emphatically admitted. “I had to devote 100% to my studies and the struggle to be successful, so I had to find 200% inside of me. Often there weren’t enough hours in the day to sleep. Sometimes that meant falling asleep in class or sneaking up to the back row of a conference late and watching wrestling videos. (laughs) I don’t recommend that, but hey, I did what I had to do at the time. It was really tough and I just remember telling myself that I can’t look too far. My goals had to be short, like what I had to do to get through this day. For me it was important to take small steps along the way. “

Given her energy and enthusiasm, it’s obvious Britt is a little different. His work ethic and determination are, to use a cliché, on another level. But in his case, the adage rings true.

“I’m very disciplined – or stubborn,” she laughs. “However, you want to spin it around. It’s me, through and through.

Britt’s dual career would eventually merge as she developed her character as a wrestler. Her idea of a “dentist wrestler” started out as something she just wanted to try, but wasn’t quite sure how to do it – or what the reaction would be. So she set her sights on an independent event in Chicago called “All In” to present herself in a whole new way: as Dr. Britt Baker, DMD

“I was wrestling on this show shortly after I graduated in dentistry,” she said. “So I could officially be called Dr. Britt Baker, DMD. For me, it was just something cool to try, even though I’ve only done it once. I wanted to advertise myself as Dr. Britt Baker coming to the ring. It was a very complete moment. But I stuck with it because there was so much buzz. It was like, ‘Oh, this girl is a dentist and a wrestler,’ which was really unique.

It took some trial and error for Britt to figure out how to make the nickname work because, “It’s not super relatable. There aren’t many people who are dentists and wrestlers.

Eventually, however, the cheers turned into boos because fans got tired of hearing about it.

“People were like, ‘We understand. You are a wrestler and a dentist. You can do it all. Shut your mouth. It’s boring!'”

Which caused a change in his personality. She started her career, in terms of wrestling, as a face or a hero. Then she turned into a heel or a “bad guy.” But fans became so drawn to his villainous approach that they started to cheer him on again.

“Yes, we are coming back to the other end of the spectrum,” she said. “The fight is funny. The fans definitely have their opinions, very daring opinions. But they like what they like and they don’t like what they don’t like.

So who is Britt Baker now?

“I’m just myself without apologizing,” she said with a smile. “And I was given the stage to do it. I am the most confident I have ever been in the ring. Whether it’s in matches, promos, or backstage segments, I’m allowed to say and do whatever I want, to a certain extent (laughs). But believing what I’m saying makes all the difference. There is no script. I don’t have to say anything. It’s about having my own opinions, my own ideas, and then taking it up a few notches because, hey, that’s wrestling baby, isn’t it? I can put it all on fire. My job is to get into people’s skin. Wrestling fans love it because it’s entertaining.

This confidence has taken her to the top of her profession and it is clear that she is having a good time. So what does she consider the best part of being a professional wrestler?

“Seeing my own personal growth and taking on the different challenges that I was not sure I would ever be able to meet,” she said. “I was able to be part of a Main Event and Dynamite this year. It was huge. It made history. People call my match with Thunder Rosa one of their all-time favorites. I didn’t know if I would ever be Main Event quality. I hoped I would and believed I could, but actually doing it was really cool.

And the worst ?

“Programming is difficult,” she admitted. “I mean, it’s a commitment. You give up a lot. Family events, graduation ceremonies, weddings, reunions. I miss a lot of things. But it’s like everything, when there are highs, there are also lows. I just have to stay stubborn through the lows because no matter what I’m going through that day, I still have to go out here and be larger than life for millions of people back home.

Britt practices dentistry in Florida, where AEW is headquartered, but she still longs for things that only her hometown can provide. What does he miss most about Steel City?

“Everything,” she laughed. “My family is here. I miss the sporting environment so much. Pittsburgh is like a ‘big town, little town’ family. And the sports atmosphere is a connection to a lot of people – the Penguins, the Pirates and the Steelers. laugh, cry and celebrate together. I miss the camaraderie with everyone here. People might think I’m crazy, but I miss the snow at Christmas and the change of seasons too. got used to it.You don’t realize how much you miss him until he’s gone.

Ironically, Britt grew up buying tickets to sporting events in Pittsburgh. Now people are buying tickets to see her, which she described as a “surreal” experience.

“It’s a really cool feeling, a pinch moment for me,” she said. “I keep using the word ‘surreal’ because there really is no better way to describe it. It’s all I ever wanted.

But now that she’s at the top of her game as the AEW Women’s World Champion, where is she going now?

“I want more,” she said. “I want to be a factor not only in the women’s wrestling, but in the whole wrestling. I want to be someone a fan buys a ticket to see or who buys a shirt for. I want to move the notes. I want to be one of the biggest stars in all of pro wrestling.

Many would say she’s already achieved that status, especially here in Brittsburgh. But everywhere in the world, at least, it is already well advanced.

And that ultimately weakens the cause of feminism because it excludes many women, especially young women. Young pro-life women often see themselves as committed to both the protection of the unborn child and the development of women. In a 2015 poll by the Public Religion Research Institute, more than half of millennial women who identified as feminists considered themselves to be pro-life (18%) or both pro-life and pro-choice (37 %). Overall, a majority of Americans (61%) support limiting abortion in one way or another.

“The pro-life movement is changing. Many young activists identify as feminists, “Emma Green wrote in The Atlantic in 2017,” and reject uniform alignment with the Republican Party, unlike their Phyllis Schlafly predecessors. According to recent polls, a large minority (43%) of women identify as pro-life. This is not to say that these women reject the vital causes of feminism, yet they are often excluded and alienated by the current feminist movement.

Pro-life women need to be included in the feminist movement precisely because there is still a lot to improve for women. The United States is the only wealthy country in the world (and only one in six in total) that does not have paid national leave for new parents. The pay gap between men and women has not improved over the past 15 years. Globally, women are much more likely to experience poverty and hunger, as well as domestic violence and homicide, and one in three women globally experience physical abuse or sexual. The vast majority of victims of human trafficking are women and girls. About 140 million girls are “missing” as a result of gender-selective abortion. Women have less access to education than men and represent two-thirds of the world’s illiterate population.

Women’s inequality is not an abstract idea. Real women face the fallout from ongoing sexism day in and day out. This is wrong, and we need to form a broad and diverse coalition to stand up for women. If the feminist movement oust the millions of American women who oppose abortion, we will fail to address these other serious issues that affect women.

This week, the Supreme Court is hearing a case challenging a Mississippi law that would ban most abortions after 15 weeks. Some predict that this will be the end of Roe v. Wade. If this is indeed the case, those of us who regard abortion as the end of a human life will celebrate this decision as a triumph of justice and a protection for the most vulnerable. Others will see it as a violation of women’s rights.

There is no way to avoid the reality that Americans, including American women, will be divided in our response to any court ruling. But in the future, pro-life and pro-choice feminists can and should find common cause to improve the lives of women. Pro-life groups must intentionally support women, not just babies in utero, and push for policies that make childbirth and child rearing easier. (There is a growing “lifetime” movement to address this need.) Pro-choice feminists must prioritize the many other important issues affecting women in addition to abortion.

Women have been and continue to be oppressed, and that is wrong. My teacher’s definition of feminism seems as compelling today as it did when I was in college. Given the amount of work that remains to be done, we need as many allies as possible. We must rediscover the art of building coalitions across deep differences if we are to improve the complex issues facing women around the world. The needs of women are urgent and we cannot meet them if feminism turns into a fight over one issue.

People talk about footballers as if they exist on a higher plane, when in reality they are just mere mortals like the rest of us. We look at them and idolize them and we wish we had their talent, or their fame, or their money. But we don’t stop to think about what life should be like for them.

Gary Speed never saw himself as anything but ordinary. For all the talent he undoubtedly had – strength, pace, vision, endurance, heart, agility – his greatest asset was his humility; his inherent belief that he was nothing special and that he should work hard to improve himself in everything. It was a character trait that not only helped him improve in football, it helped him in everyday life. It meant people relied on and respected him, but it meant they never thought to ask after him.

As a footballer you would describe Gary Speed as the ultimate professional or a manager’s dream. This would be due to his dedication, reliability, versatility and willingness to perform for the team and not for himself. Gary Speed was always there, he never missed a game, he never hid in a game, he was always in the thick of it, he was always on the scoresheet, he was always under the projectors. But he never wanted to be.

Speed’s dedication was legendary

Despite all the movie star looks and lavish traps of the media-saturated lifestyle he fell into, that never changed Gary Speed. His humility tempered his natural charisma. He was still the same person who knew he had to train hard every day, had to listen to every manager and had to take care of his body. On the outside, it might seem that everything was coming easily; there was still a smile, still a playful glint in his eyes, still an effortless coldness for what he was doing. And yet below, clearly nothing came easily.

Gary Speed signed associate schoolboy forms for Leeds United at the age of 14. Revie’s old boys Eddie Gray and Billy Bremner both saw something in him, but it was Howard Wilkinson, the crucial break with the past, that made Speed such a part of a fabulous era of success. marauder. At 18, Speed made his debut in a late-season draw against Oldham, a year later he had already been instrumental in freeing Leeds United from their Second Division purgatory.

Speed made his Leeds debut at the age of 18

Adding youthful vigor to a failing team showing signs of fatigue, Speed’s natural effervescence provided three goals and a vital boost as Leeds rushed towards promotion. And there was no turning back for Gary Speed.

Leeds rolled along the tracks of the Premier League like a runaway train. With his accomplice David Batty, Speed embodied the carefree spirit that could only bring more success. Always smiling and still enjoying the game, Speed and Batty achieved their top status like ducks in the water. It was football on autopilot. You just had to introduce yourself, turn it on and watch it go. Football was effortless, hassle-free and natural which is how you always dreamed football should be. It was a privilege to be a witness and it was a youthful obsession with mortal beings who were not much older than me, but who inhabited a higher plane. Nothing normal could not read this joy, this rapture. Gary Speed, David Batty, this team, for this youngster, were not normal.

Speed shares a joke with Tony Dorigo

Speed was the Fab Four’s most attacking midfielder, starting out as a left winger and quickly becoming known for a runaway into the penalty area, always looking for the ball or a space, and normally finding both. He was named Howard Wilkinson’s MVP in the 1991/92 season, which was no small feat in a squad generously strewn with ten out of ten players that season, and his versatility made it so. caused him to look to the left-back and like a striker while Leeds upset the natural order of football to sweep the title under everyone’s noses.

Speed achieved double goals in midfield in four consecutive seasons from 1990/91 to 1993/94, in the meantime adapting his abilities to become Gary McAllister’s midfielder central partner, and adding more maturity and responsibility at his game. But fortunes had darkened at Elland Road and change was in the air.

It would be wrong to water down Gary Speed’s legacy and pretend it ended well for him at Leeds. The team and the club had lost their luster, as had Speed himself. It was time for him to move on and there was little fuss, resentment or tears when he did. The regret now is that Speed’s form was a consequence of the club’s loss, and it was just a blow in an otherwise stellar career. Leeds fans have been deprived of Speed’s peak years, but the memories are still good, and the footage portrays the happiest times watching an action hero perform to the best of his sharpened abilities.

Speed with his title-winning teammates

His first goal against Bradford City was a typical, perfectly synchronized run in the box and a neat finish. His effort down the pitch in the 4-0 demolition of Sheffield United got him to approve his arrival on the scene. His long-distance effort at Southampton in the winning season was elegant but deadly. And his exquisite volley to start the game 4-1 against Stuttgart at Elland Road was epitomized in style and class. Add to these a catalog of headers defying the gravity of a Herculean force.

Nothing Gary Speed has done has been messy. It all came out of a textbook that you could pass to a budding kid and say ‘copy this and you’ll be fine’. And that’s what people do. Yes, Gary Speed was the ultimate professional. He was the hero we all admired, the footballer and the person we all wanted to be. He was still there.

And yet, his life will forever be etched in the memories of the ends. On the one hand, the fulfillment, reverence and adulation of the “Roy of the Rovers”. And at the other end the darkness, the loneliness and the macabre. In the middle is the biggest chasm. And we are all lost in the search for answers that we will never find. Because we believe these people exist on a higher level, when in reality they are like us, with the same vulnerabilities, insecurities, and questions.

Burley Banksy’s tribute to speed

It’s just what they do with their abilities that sets them apart. And Gary Speed did it all with his. It would be wrong to suggest that we shouldn’t worship footballers and put them on a pedestal because life is all about dreams and you can’t have a better person to admire than Gary Speed.

But we must not believe that everyone is invincible, even when it seems that they are, we must always ask questions and seek reassurance and talk to them. Because Gary Speed has always been there, and we thought he always would be. And now all we can do is wonder why it isn’t.

Matt Pendleton-USA TODAY Sports

Some of the players we’ve discussed here are already hard to imagine as a future pro, and the rest of the roster is too far away to even squint and see a prospect.

Brandon McKissic and Phlandrous Fleming Jr. have never played against high competition and are old for amateurs, who are big black marks on their resumes. They would have to turn off the lights and turn off the opposing guards defensively to even be on the radar. Also, McKissic’s size will play against him and Fleming definitely needs to be more responsible with the ball in his hands. They play with a ton of fire, a common trait on this list, but the desire to win isn’t as valuable as the skills to win.

Anthony Durji is an athletic specimen, and a summary of his soaring jumps and relentless 3-point attempts would paint a picture of a future NBA player. It gets too hot, however, and it’s technically unrefined and unruly. As a fifth year player, he will be considered too old for these mistakes to be excusable.

Niels Street maybe could change the conversation with a great year if everything clicks, but at the moment it’s still an unknown amount. The Gators love his tenacity, have confidence in his ability to defend most positions and he’s been said to be an improved shooter. However, he will have to put all these lines on the ground for long minutes to move the needle. If he finds himself as a non-leading ball player, that might not be enough in an initially offensive NBA environment.

After Keizer City Council handed over the management of Keizer Little Park to For the Love of the Game, the association officially hired Corey Paul to manage the day-to-day operations of the facility.

Corey Paul will oversee the grounds planning and maintenance of Keizer Little League Park (KEIZERTIMES / Matt Rawlings).

After Keizer City Council handed over the management of Keizer Little Park to For the Love of the Game, the association officially hired Corey Paul to manage the day-to-day operations of the facility.

The resident of Vancouver, Wash. will be the only full-time employee of For the Love of the Game. He will oversee field planning and park maintenance.

“We’ve interviewed a few people, but Corey has always been the first choice in our minds, just because of his background and all of his baseball experience,” said Mickey Walker, CEO of the Mavericks League and Founder of For the Love of the Game. “He’s kind of been at all levels of baseball so having that kind of experience, especially when it comes to a resort like this, is going to be invaluable.”

Prior to his facilities management background, Paul was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 16th round of the 1987 MLB Draft. He spent four years in the Mariners’ system where he shared an outfield with Ken Griffey Jr. while playing for Bellingham – the organization that would later become the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes when Mavericks League owner Jerry Walker moved to the franchise in 1997.

Paul says the relationship he formed with Jerry Walker over 30 years ago was the catalyst for which he was chosen to lead the resort.

“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and I really appreciate Jerry for choosing me. For me, it’s about being visible. What makes me a good fit for this opportunity is because we have a legacy together. Its reputation, heritage and experience through baseball are community driven, ”said Paul. “I’m glad I can still be a part of a baseball community. It doesn’t matter if it’s half a block away or halfway around the world. I want to represent the community as best I can.”

Paul left baseball for four seasons before returning in 1995 to play in the Independent Western League until 1998. He then played professionally in Mexico, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan until 2005. He is then returned to independent ball before retiring as a player in 2005 – which was the same year Paul started Northwestern Baseball Academy, a high school and college preparation program for baseball and softball players.

Paul also spent time coaching and scouting in Taiwan and Japan.

His first experience in organizing tournaments and field management began at Sherman Park in Canada, working with the Parks and Recreation Department to help with lawn maintenance and field manicures. Paul had a similar job in Vancouver, Washington, where he coordinated the camps and maintained the facilities.

Paul believes his past experience will be of benefit as he begins his new gig.

“The routine is not much different. We had to manage eight fields and make sure they were well taken care of and maintained, ”said Paul.

Currently, Paul is wintering at Keizer Little League Park, setting the stage for the baseball players’ return in March.

“There’s a lot to do here, it’s just a matter of putting the ducks in the pond,” Paul said.

One of the aspects of the job that Paul looks forward to the most is watching young players learn and grow. But he also hopes to receive feedback from parents and community members on what he could do to help the park run better.

“I just want to be on the pitch every day and see the players transform and improve. I want to be in the facility often because I will kind of be the face of this place, ”said Paul. “I want to be visible, available and responsive to the needs of the city”,

With the Town of Keizer agreeing to a 10-year contract with For the Love of the Game, Mickey Walker has high hopes of bringing sod to the resort one day. Paul, on the other hand, has even bigger aspirations, including exploring the possibility of bringing a dome to the resort one day – yes, you read that right.

“Aiming for the moon. I don’t know if that’s the feasibility or the timing. But if you have a community that’s so engaged, there’s no reason it couldn’t happen. I think it would definitely add of value to Keizer and Salem, “said Paul.” I want to have facilities that people will enjoy.

“I have been to a number of places around the world where the facilities had a domed stadium. It doesn’t get any better. You can do all kinds of things, from RV shows, to concerts, even soccer. “

Paul says there would have to be big donors to make the dream of a dome a reality, but the benefits of a world-class facility would be immense.

“If we could get that kind of status in this neighborhood, I think we should definitely take care of it,” Paul said.

No matter if he can achieve lofty dreams, Paul’s main goal is to make Keizer Little League Park a positive place for children, regardless of their age or skill level.

“We want to create an atmosphere and an experience for these players,” said Paul. “I think it’s right that we release something that will appeal to people. We are going to be optimistic and put all we can into it. “

Apple has announced that a “small percentage” of iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro devices manufactured between October 2020 and April 2021 experience sound issues and, as a result, both of these devices are eligible for free repair and service. The company explains the current program covers the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro models for two years after the unit is first sold at retail. Users in India can also get free service if their iPhone 12 or 12 Pro unit is facing similar sound issues. Apple warns that users should back up the device to iCloud or a computer before returning it to service.

In its support forum, Apple explains that some iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro units may experience sound issues due to a “component” that might fail on the receiver module. The company warns that if both variants have other damage that could affect the repair, such as a cracked screen, that issue will need to be addressed before service. In addition, users may have to pay an amount in some special repair cases. In this case, it is better to check if your iPhone is still under warranty. To check the warranty status, users will need to find the serial number of the product first by going to Settings> General> About and then at checkcoverage.apple.com and enter details such as serial number and special code.

Then find the nearest Apple Authorized Service Provider and make an appointment for the phone check. IPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro users can also contact Apple Support (through website) to arrange mail service. The company adds that the current free repair program does not extend the standard warranty for the iPhone 12 or iPhone 12 Pro. Apple has not clarified the exact number of smartphone units affected by sound issues and more details from the company are expected shortly.

SAN ANTONIO – Miss Reality character Madi Wrenkowski in the ring is arrogant, talented, and would do anything to win.

Even if that means vertically suplexing her opponent on stage and winning by count just like she did at the River City Wrestling (RCW) Breakthrough show. She usually finishes off her opponents with her signature move, reality check, which is a scissor bite.

“Count, reff, count,” she cried.

Her theme song begins with the intro to the hit Spice Girls’ single “Wannabe”, but is interrupted by a scratch and followed by the single “Bossy” from the Harlem singer Kelis.

The song’s lyrics compliment Wrenkowski: “You don’t have to love me. You don’t even have to love me, but you will respect me.”

She exchanged words with fans and told ring announcer Carolina Teague to get out of her camera shot.

It was one of the biggest games of her career as she challenged Kamille Brickhouse for the NWA Women’s World Championship in the main event. This is something that would have been unprecedented years ago.

“But, at least now we’re getting the platform that we deserve, for me, what I’d like to see is maybe not just focusing on just ‘oh yeah, the main female event’ anymore. Yeah, that’s cool, but let’s call it a main event, ”Wrenkowski said.

She doesn’t get the chance to fight for a prestigious title overnight – it starts at places like the Hybrid School of Wrestling on San Antonio’s Northside, where students learn to take bumps, talk to the mic and storytelling in the ring.

They then made names for themselves in independent promotions like RCW, led by Brandon Oliver. There has been a huge wave of women’s wrestling both at the major and independent level and they are stealing the show.

Christi Jaynes has struggled for seven years and been part of that shift in what she calls a male dominated industry.

“It’s cool because they’re like ‘wow these women are just as good, if not better than men,’” Jaynes said.

It’s the kind of fuss that can help increase Jaynes and Wrenkowski’s shares in the business.

Wrenkowski saw his stock skyrocket after appearing in several episodes of All Elite Wrestling’s “AEW Dark” shows. She has worked on programs with the legendary wrestling name Vickie Guerrero and is currently mentored by AEW superstar Thunder Rosa.

“Having all of these appearances kind of sparked interest in me, as it should be… Every weekend was booked,” Wrenkowski said.

She says constant travel can be grueling, but that’s part of the game.

Even though women’s wrestling is booming, Wrenkowski still deals with promoters stuck in the past.

“There have been reservations that I had to turn down because they weren’t willing to pay me what I deserve, but they’re willing to pay a guy more or double because he’s a guy,” Wrenkowski said.

But Miss Reality knows her worth, and even though she didn’t win Camille’s championship, she knows her status has risen even higher just by being in the game. It goes back to Kelis’ lyrics in his theme song.

Despite being a heel, Wrenkowski received a standing ovation after the game because RCW fans knew how important this moment was to his career. She says she would prefer her name to be in the history of promotions that will respect her.

“If you can’t see my worth because I’m not a man and I’m 200 pounds or whatever size, then it’s yours.” You’re just not going to have my name in your story, ”exclaimed Wrenkowski.

LONDON (AP) – Manchester United’s sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Sunday highlighted the strangeness of his appointment three years ago and the loopholes in the club’s determination to persevere for so long with a manager whose credentials were constantly being put doubtful because a large investment in players did not matter much. impact on the ground.

Even after correcting losses to fierce rivals Liverpool (5-0) and Manchester City (2-0) last month, United have remained loyal to Solskjaer.

As Aston Villa and Norwich took advantage of the two-week international break to fire and recruit new managers, United management waited after Saturday’s 4-1 collapse at Watford – a fifth loss in seven games at Premier League – to finally decide that a change was needed in the dugout.

“Ole will always be a legend at Manchester United and it is with regret that we have made this difficult decision,” United said in a statement.

It was only Solskjaer’s legendary status that earned him the job in the first place as Jose Mourinho’s successor and kept him in office for so long without winning a trophy.

There was so much that the taste of scoring the spectacular late winner of the 1999 Champions League final could shield the Norwegian from the criticisms that so often put his future on the line. The three-year contract extension granted to Solskjaer before the season by club owners, the Glazer family, has now been terminated.

“While the past few weeks have been disappointing, they shouldn’t mask all the work he has done over the past three years to rebuild the foundations for long-term success,” United said. “Ole leaves with our sincere thanks for his tireless efforts as a manager and our best wishes for the future.

“His place in the history of the club will always be assured, not just for his history as a player, but as a great man and manager who has provided us with many great moments. He will always be welcome at Old Trafford at within the Manchester United family. “

The sacking comes amid a period of uncertainty in the boardroom with the extended departure of Ed Woodward as executive vice president and no successor has been announced. General manager Richard Arnold, who has been linked to the club’s day-to-day leadership role, is like Woodward another executive with more business than football experience.

There is no clear succession plan after the departure of the fourth manager since Alex Ferguson retired in 2013. Instead, just like when Mourinho left, United turned to one of the former Ferguson players. United have said Michael Carrick, who was part of Solskjaer’s coaching staff, will take charge “of the matches ahead, as the club seek to appoint an interim manager until the end of the season.”

Carrick’s first experience as a first-team coach will be a trip to Spain for a Champions League match at Villarreal in the group stage on Tuesday before guiding United against Premier League leaders Chelsea on Sunday. United are seventh in the Premier League, which they haven’t won since 2013, already 12 points behind Chelsea and six in the Champions League after 12 of 38 games.

This is nowhere near enough for a team that finished second last season and were supposed to fight for the title after spending more than $ 500 million for players under Solskjaer, including the return of Cristiano Ronaldo in August. and the signature of Jadon Sancho.

Solskjaer, who played for United from 1996 to 2007 under Ferguson, was given the managerial post on a permanent basis in 2019 after a promising start at Old Trafford as a goalkeeper, having rediscovered some of the offensive verve of the team and bringing calm after the toxic end of Mourinho’s tenure.

“You gave the club a new lease of life,” former teammate Gary Neville said on Sunday.

United have finished third and second in the last two seasons in the Premier League, suggesting the team are heading in the right direction under Solskjaer. However, the regression has been brutal this season and it starts off as a sentimental date gone bad, its tactical limitations clearly apparent and the team’s inconsistent performance leading to doubts still present among some fans and critics about its pedigree. as a manager.

“When a manager can’t get a performance from his players and the results get as bad as they are, in this game you’re going to lose your job,” said Neville, who had resisted the use of his expert work on Sky. “He’s always had a result in the past that got him out of the quagmire when you thought it might get a little too hard for him, but this time the results just got worse and worse and worse and worse.”

Solskjaer had been able to overcome previous spells of underperformance, in part because of his popularity with fans as a former striker who gained legendary status due to his ability to come off the bench to score crucial winners.

But even traveling United fans seemed to turn on him when he came to cheer them after the Watford game when Donny van de Beek – a player he was rarely used to amazement – scored the lone goal after entering play as a substitute.

And there was a damning final review from goalkeeper David De Gea.

“We don’t know what to do with the ball,” he said. “We don’t know how to defend properly. It was embarrassing. “
