Anker’s Soundcore Liberty 3 Pro headphones are on sale now for $129.99 starting at Amazon and best buy.

Available in four colors (gray, purple, white, black), the noise-canceling headphones are $40 off their retail price of $169.99.

Featuring a minimalist footless design, they come with a range of in-ear fit options, including four pairs of silicone tips and four pairs of ear wings for stabilization. Internally, a dual-driver array delivers powerful sound on the go, with support for Bluetooth 5.2 and AAC, LDAC and SBC Bluetooth codecs. Capacitive touch surfaces on the exterior handle control playback, phone calls, and noise cancellation, making it easy to recall loud low-frequency rumbles.

The Soundcore app (for iOS and Android) makes it easy to adjust Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) and Transparency modes, as well as access to a wind noise reduction feature and HearID, which adjusts the ANC at your hearing. It also allows users to customize on-ear controls and access the eight-band EQ. An IPX4 rating makes the headphones splash resistant and they should withstand a sweaty workout.

While most carrying cases open like a clamshell, the Soundcore Liberty 3 Pro’s lid slides back to reveal charging docks with magnets that help snap the earbuds into place. Look for LED status indicators on the front and a USB-C port on the back; you can also use a Qi-compatible charger to power the wireless box.

Anker estimates around eight hours of battery life, plus another 24 hours with the case; times may vary depending on listening volume and active noise cancellation.

Block out distractions with the Soundcore Liberty 3 Pro headphones from Anker, on sale now for $129.9924% off sticker price of $169.99.

The offseason is here for half of the league’s teams that aren’t playoff-bound. It’s time to consider what they will need to accomplish over the next few months. The next step is a look at Arizona.

This season has gone more or less as expected for the Coyotes. After blowing up their roster over the summer and cementing their status as a team committed to a long-term rebuild, expectations were low heading into the year and they delivered, finishing last in the Western Conference. Their direction seems unlikely to change (beyond playing out of a college arena for next season) and their checklist reflects that accordingly.

Add a second guardian

One of the positives of this season was the unexpected appearance of Karel Vejmelka between the pipes. Originally seen as extra depth, he worked his way up the opening roster and things only got better from there. It earned him a three-year contract extension at the trade deadline and secured part of their goaltending tandem for the next few years.

The other half of this pairing, however, remains a work in progress. Ivan Prosvetov struggled in his limited duty in the NHL, Josef Korenar had a particularly difficult season in the minors, and asks for a waiver Harri Sateri only had a 0.866 SV% in his six appearances in the streak. Suffice it to say, the perfect partner for Vejmelka is not currently in the organization.

The team can take two paths to fill this spot. They may consider adding a veteran free agent, which they did this year when they signed Carter Huton although aiming a bit higher this time around would make sense. There are several veteran netminders available once again and adding one on a short term contract would solve the short term problem and is a perfectly reasonable solution. But how attractive will the team be with the direction it’s headed and the fact that it won’t be playing at an NHL-sized facility for some time?

On the other hand, as a team that has shown a willingness to accept unwanted contracts, this must also be an avenue to explore. There are higher-priced starters with deals their teams wouldn’t hesitate to walk away from and it stands to reason that they could add draft picks or prospects as compensation for taking the contract out of their hands. This could lead to some longer term stability to the position with additional future assets as well.

Chychrun Ruling

Last summer, it was expected that the defender Jakob Chychrun was going to be moving, but it never materialized. Then, during the season, reports surfaced that he was available but the asking price was quite high, with those reports listing the price as at least three or more first-round items. He then suffered an ankle injury about a week and a half before the trade deadline, which ended any thoughts he might be moved.

But now it’s the offseason where it’s easier to trade players with time remaining on their contracts and Chychrun still has three years left on his contract with a $4.6 million AAV. General manager Bill Armstrong said at the end of the season that a trade involving his top defenseman was something they would explore, which will only add fuel to the fire.

However, beyond the summer often giving more flexibility in roster building, the same issues that existed during the season are still there now. The asking price is almost certain to remain extremely high and while there has been speculation that there are teams ready to meet it, the fact that a trade hasn’t taken place either means it doesn’t. was not the case, either that the price rose even more.

The other is that Chychrun isn’t exactly coming off a good season. Few Coyotes have had good years in 2021-22, but the 24-year-old has taken a step back despite still managing to put up 21 points in 47 games. There’s certainly a good enough record to indicate he can get back to form, but getting back to that form in an Arizona uniform would strengthen their bargaining position.

As a result, their biggest decision of the summer is deciding Chychrun’s future. Do they take the best deal they can get for him now or roll the dice and see if he can work his way up to increased business value? At this point, a trade is probably the best decision for everyone involved.

Crouse – Swap or re-sign?

A Coyote who had a good season was the winger Lawson Crouse. The 2015 first-round pick played an increased role under head coach André Tourigny and responded with career highs in goals (20) and points (34) despite missing 17 games due to of an injury. He also contributed physically with almost 2.8 hits per game. It’s been a great year of platforming ahead of his first year of refereeing eligibility as a free agent with compensation.

The 24-year-old still has two years of RFA eligibility as he failed to reach the 40-game mark in his second professional season in 2016-17, which prevented him from accumulating a year on the seven needed to achieve UFA status. . A power forward at the peak of his career with a few years of team control remaining – that’s the definition of a key part of Arizona’s future plan…or a key trade chip.

The market rate in terms of salary for a base forward is still quite expensive and it’s likely Crouse’s camp will look into Josh Anderson(seven years, $5.5 million AAV) as a comparable in all long-term discussions. Is this a price Arizona will want to pay? That’s certainly steep considering his track record, but at the same time he’s young enough to still be part of the core when they finally emerge from their rebuild.

Or should they cash in when its trade value is likely at its highest? Is there a team ready to part ways with a high-quality prospect to get a young power forward? There probably are. Although they would run the risk of moving it a little too soon (another year like this in 2022-23 would only increase its business value), it would ensure that they would get a solid return and an asset that could line closer to their young nucleus.

While Chychrun will dominate the discussion surrounding the Coyotes for the next few moments, deciding what to do with Crouse will be a big part of Arizona’s offseason.

Keep stocking

There will come a time when the Coyotes will have too many choices and prospects; they are already eyeing the draft class of 2024 with some of their moves. However, they are not there yet. What should all reconstruction teams do? Stock young assets.

Arizona is starting to run out of important trade chips, especially if Chychrun and Crouse are moved. However, they can still take advantage of their ceiling space. We saw them accept unwanted contracts several times last summer and even got a quality piece in Shayne Gostisbehere which could be a trade chip closer to the trade deadline of 2023. They have taken contracts in the past for players on LTIR and recently did so with Bryan Small. They can always afford to do this to add more picks and prospects and with some uncertainty about the level of attractiveness as a free agent with their arena and competitive situation, it would definitely help them fill out their roster for next season.

Eventually, some of their choices and perspectives will need to be consolidated to help them take a few steps forward. Until then, when it comes to future assets, the more the better.

Australian surfers Isabella Nichols and Jack Robinson won the World Surfing League’s Margaret River Pro on Thursday, but a new rule introduced to the competition this year has not gone down well with athletes.

Several big-name surfers – including Tokyo Olympians Sally Fitzgibbons, Owen Wright and Morgan Cibilic – lost their Championship Tour status after the WSL’s mid-season cut following the Western Australia decider.

They will now compete in the second tier “Challenger Series” as the WSL aims to create more drama and pressure among the competitors.

It is the first time Fitzgibbons has been removed from the main tour in 14 years and 108 consecutive events.

The former world number one was visibly upset after her loss to Frenchwoman Johanne Defray, who comforted the Australian while she was still in the water.

“The unconditional love that comes with putting on my #89 jersey. Everything about this sport, the surfing community and my dream keeps me coming back for more,” she later wrote on social media.

“I felt every one of those cheers and hugs from you yesterday and I hope I can return the favor when we meet in your big moment.”

Wright, who won bronze in Tokyo, was also eliminated after results in another contest. A day earlier, the prospect of being relegated had made him reconsider his future as a surfer.

“I know I surf very well, but I have a lot of life outside of touring – kids and a wife and so on,” Wright said.

However, the rule change arguably worked, with lesser-known Australians Nichols and Robinson winning their first women’s and men’s titles.

Nichols played out a tense, low-scoring final against Hawaiian rookie Gabriela Bryan, while local wonderkid Robinson defeated two-time world champion John John Florence.

Loading

“So many hours, so much time, so when you win like that, it’s really special,” said Robinson, who captured some of the event’s biggest and most critical waves earlier, ” said Nichols after his first championship tour win.

“I’m so grateful.”

Heading into the Margaret River event, Nichols needed to win and Bryan needed to advance to the final to fight his way over the cup from the back of the court.

“For this to happen right now, I feel like I’m still in bed at home, asleep,” she said.

“It will take me time to digest it.

“There is no better feeling than this in the whole world.”

The men’s field will now be reduced to 24 out of 36 and the women’s field to 12 out of 18 for the remaining five events.

And the top five male and female surfers will then battle it out for the title in one-day finals in California in September.

Ryon Barnesky is back where his love of golf began.

The Chater native grew up learning the ropes at Glen Lea Golf Course and worked there for four summers. Four and a half years later, he is the club’s associate professional. The 26-year-old is as excited as anyone for the opening day of Glen Lea’s 40th season on Thursday.

“Growing up and being able to hit those milestones: breaking 100 for the first time, breaking 90, breaking 80, breaking 70 and having the opportunity to come back, this place has a special place in my heart, so it’s nice to come back like a pro and help him develop even more,” Barnesky said.

He joined the pro shop staff at Glen Lea in 2014 after high school. He didn’t know exactly what he wanted to do, but if he’s in class all day anyway, why not get paid? Barnesky soon realized that it didn’t feel like work.

“If you turn your passion into a job, it doesn’t really work,” he said.

In 2017, Barnesky headed to Fanshawe College in London, Ontario for the two-year golf and club management program. The lessons are quite practical, including food and drink, management, accounting, golf operations, golf swing analysis, and turf maintenance.

Between the two years, students must complete a six-month internship at a golf course. With the help of one of his teacher’s connections, Barnesky landed at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge in Jasper, Alberta. Golf Digest ranked it fifth of all courses in Canada and ScoreGolf third.

He couldn’t teach, no, he was in the back room cleaning clubs and washing carts – a job that doesn’t exist at most Westman tracks.

There really is no comparison to the superb design of Stanley Thompson in Manitoba, for several reasons. For one thing, a Glen Lea membership ($875) costs less than a foursome during peak season at Jasper Park Lodge ($250 per player). High expectations precede these kinds of pieces.

“A big thing with them was the service levels,” Barnesky said. “It’s a luxury property, so they have their standards, the Fairmont brand. It’s a lot of things that I’ve slowly developed being shaped by the Fairmont brand and take with me.

“Top notch customer service, people spending their hard-earned money to come and play golf so giving them that little bit extra, anticipating their needs…it was one of the best learning experiences to pick it all up. ”

Barnesky also improved his game, matching his career-low 3-under 67 at Glen Lea with a 3-under 68 at JPL, which is playing about six hits harder. He returned for the same job the following summer, then moved to the pro shop in 2020 and took his Playing Aptitude Test (PAT) in 2021.

The PAT is the big step in the career of a club professional. Barnesky had to shell out a few hundred dollars to apply (it’s $367 plus tax this year) and then attend one of the five events offered in Alberta that year. Previously, there were two rounds, with a maximum total of around 155, depending on the course rating. It was cut back to one round and Barnesky had to shoot the course score plus nine, which totaled 78 on his first attempt at Winston Golf Club in Calgary.

He was on cruise control, 1 cent through eight holes when the wheels fell off. His tee shot on the par-3 ninth found a back bunker, from which he launched a skull shot into the water and, sparing detail, walked with a nine. He doubled the next hole and birdied the 11th, but stumbled on the stretch and missed the mark.

He had to drop another $170 and travel to Stony Plain Golf Course near Edmonton for the next PAT. Barnesky jumped straight from his car to the first tee in windy, rainy conditions, having never seen the course and not even having a minute to warm up. He shot 79 and passed with no shots to spare.

“Knowing that I was on the number, yeah, (I was nervous),” Barnesky said. “I think I was 7-15, so on the count, and I ended up saving a few pars and got it.”

Barnesky is nearing completion of his training, but has yet to complete the PGA of Canada Training Academy program. Pros must earn 30 credits over six years, which typically costs between $5,000 and $6,000, Barnesky said. Luckily, he was able to transfer some credits from Fanshawe and will upgrade from Apprentice to Class “A” Professional status upon completion.

In the meantime, Barnesky is eager to improve the member experience at Glen Lea by adding fun tournaments, bringing back the club championship after nine years without one and counting. He is also eager to teach.

“Leading members and the public who have struggled with their golf game for five, 10, 20, 30 years,” he said, “maybe this little piece of advice can change the game for them.

Those interested in lessons can email ryon@glenleagolf.ca, call the pro shop at 204-728-9090 or connect on Instagram at @rbgolfpga.

The long, nasty winter is over and the wait ends on Thursday. Barnesky couldn’t be more excited to see his club in action.

“It’s cool, it’s come full circle,” Barnesky said. “I remember taking my first tee shot on one and swinging in the air, now I’m here as a pro.”

BIRDS : Shilo Country Club opens today, while Glen Lea and Wheat City kick off the season on Thursday and Oak Island hosts play on Friday… Mulligan’s driving range and recreation is open from noon today… The Clear Lake’s Monday Best Ball league begins mid-June and is looking for two-person teams to join. Despite a relatively low price of just $69.99, the 1More PistonBuds Pro offer decent active noise cancellation (ANC) and a balanced, precision-focused sound signature. They are also water resistant and have a low latency mode for gaming, increasing their value proposition. Unfortunately, lackluster on-ear controls and a lack of EQ customization options hold them back from top-tier status in this price range. For $10 more, Anker’s Soundcore Life P3 headphones remain our Editors’ Choice winners under $100 because they’re easier to control and customize, plus they offer superior noise cancellation.

Small size, disappointing controls

Available in black or white, the PistonBuds Pro are quite small, but they fit securely without the need for additional accessories. The package includes three pairs of silicone ear tips in small, medium and large sizes.

(Photo: Tim Gideon)

The exterior of each earbud functions as a capacitive touch control panel. A double press controls media playback and call handling, a long press toggles between different ANC modes, and a triple press summons your device’s voice assistant. In the app, you can change the gesture from the triple tap to control navigation or track volume, but you lose the existing feature in the process. The panels are also less responsive than we’d prefer and didn’t register many double taps in testing. Other headphones just do a much better job with on-ear controls.

PC Mag Logo

Our experts have tested 97 Products of category Headphones over the past year

Since 1982, PCMag has tested and reviewed thousands of products to help you make better buying decisions. (See how we test.)

The PistonBuds Pro are compatible with Bluetooth 5.2 and support AAC and SBC codecs, but not AptX.

Each earbud carries an IPX5 rating, which means they can withstand light splashes of water from all directions. The earbuds should hold up to exposure to rain and sweat with no problem, but you shouldn’t rinse them under a faucet. And since this note doesn’t apply to the case, be sure to completely dry the headphones before docking them for charging. The Jabra Elite 3 headphones ($79.99) offer a slightly higher IP55 rating and might be a better choice if you’re looking for a pair suitable for exercise.

The flip charging case is relatively compact and has a status light on the front panel. The rear panel houses a USB-C port for the USB-C to USB-A charging cable that arrives in the package. 1More estimates that the PistonBuds Pro can last around 7.5 hours on battery power and the case holds an additional 22.5 hours of charge (with ANC off). Of course, your volume levels and ANC usage will affect these ratings. With ANC on, for example, battery life is rated at five hours.

The 1More app (available for Android and iOS) offers many features. You can switch between ANC and Transparency modes; switch to low latency game mode; upgrade firmware; and choose from several equalizer presets (although unfortunately you can’t create custom ones). Alternatively, you can switch between ANC Strong and ANC WNR (wind noise reduction) modes – the mode you choose remains active until you change it again.

Mainly effective noise cancellation and accurate sound

The PistonBuds Pro offer solid noise cancellation for the price. In testing, they noticeably reduced the loud low-frequency rumble (like you hear on an airplane). They also admirably reduced the volume of a busy restaurant recording with loud dishes and loud conversation. The higher frequencies passed the ANC filters without too much trouble, but that’s typical of affordable models. We also noticed the addition of a hiss to the signal (think slight white noise), but that’s also common in this price range. Ultimately, we still like the noise-canceling performance of the Soundcore Life P3 headphones a bit better.

When it comes to audio, on tracks with intense sub-bass content, like The Knife’s “Silent Shout,” the headphones deliver a powerful low-frequency response and don’t distort at the loudest volume levels. students. At more moderate levels, the bass still sounds robust and the treble offers reasonable balance.

Bill Callahan’s “Drover”, a track with much shallower bass in the mix, reveals the sonic signature better. The drums in this song might sound too thunderous on the bass-boosted models, but 1More takes a more subtle approach: the drums are given such body and depth, though nothing ever sounds unnatural. Callahan’s baritone voice features extra richness in the low-mids, as well as great definition in the high-mids and highs. We note a solid balance between bass and treble overall, so the sound signature doesn’t really stand out as advanced bass or overly crisp. Even if you select the bass boost EQ mode, the low frequency boost is still subtle compared to most competitors.

1 more open case for pistonbuds pro

(Photo: Tim Gideon)

On Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “No Church in the Wild,” the kick drum loop gets plenty of high-mid presence and retains its attack. The sub-bass synth hits that punctuate the beat sound a little subtly – we hear their throaty top notes, but don’t get much subwoofer-like bass depth here. Again, the bass setting in the EQ section of the app doesn’t add much punch. Otherwise, vocals are clear and crisp, without too much extra sibilance.

Orchestral tracks, such as John Adams’ opening scene The Gospel According to the Other Mary, clear and detailed sound. The lower register instrumentation doesn’t get much boost here, so the spotlight remains on the upper register brass, strings, and vocals. None of the elements ever feel thin or brittle, further emphasizing the natural, flat response-style sound signature.

The built-in mic works well, and we had no trouble catching every word of a test recording on an iPhone. We didn’t notice any obvious Bluetooth audio artifacts in the signal.

Affordable and above-average active noise cancellation

We really like 1More’s PistonBuds Pro – their active noise cancellation is better than you’d expect for the price, and their sound signature is surprisingly natural. A compact design and low-latency gaming mode should also appeal to some fans. But the inefficient control layout and lack of EQ customization options hold them back a bit. Ultimately, the aforementioned Soundcore Life P3s are better headphones under $100, with stronger noise cancellation and on-ear controls. If you don’t need noise cancellation, Jabra’s Elite 3 headphones are also easier to use and have a slightly higher water resistance rating, making them better suited for indoor use. sport.

The inconvenients

  • Limited on-ear controls

  • No customizable EQ

The essential

The 1More PistonBuds Pro offer a precision-focused sound signature and solid noise cancellation for a reasonable price, though their on-ear controls might be better.

Recently, The Athletic’s Corey Masisak had the chance to sit down with numerous San Jose Sharks players to work out the final details of their status before another offseason without a playoff spot for the Sharks. Speaking to Masisak, striker Time Meier said he hadn’t thought about a contract extension yet, but it was something he would think about over the summer (link). For now, says Meier, his main focus is the upcoming world championships, where he will represent Switzerland. The Sharks star has one more year left on a four-year, $24 million deal, which will leave him as an RFA ahead of the 2023 offseason.

Meier signed his final contract after a stellar campaign of 30 goals, 36 assists and 78 games in 2018-19, the last of his entry-level contract. After that, Meier failed to reach the same level of production until this year when the striker registered 35 goals and 41 assists in 77 games. With the rebound, Meier could not only expect to receive a similar AAV on his next contract, but could even get a raise. If he chooses to suspend an extension and can continue production until next season, he would surely be entitled to a significant raise. A notable question ahead of those negotiations will be whether Meier chooses to pursue a bridging deal that will take him directly to UFA status, or whether he would prefer a long-term extension at or near the eight-year maximum.

  • Before Logan Couture says he does not plan to play at the world championships to rest (link). Moreover, the captain of the Sharks said that he does not welcome any offer to play elsewhere and that he did not make this request himself, and that in fact, he would prefer to finish his career with the Sharks. While his team has fallen on hard times and entered a mini-rebuild, Couture’s career could seem to mirror that of his state rival Dustin Brown, who enjoyed great success with the Kings early in his career, then underwent a rebuild with the Kings and has now announced his retirement after this season, but not before seeing his team through their first playoff series since 2017-18. Couture, who just turned 33, has had a long history with San Jose and may very well prefer to go all the way with the organization, hoping to lead the team to a Stanley Cup down the road. Regardless, Couture is signed for $8 million per season through 2026-27 with a modified no-trade clause.
  • Goalie Hill of Adinwho has suffered injuries this season, does not expect to need surgery for his persistent lower body injury (link). Instead, Hill said, the plan is to rest and rehabilitate the injury to resolve it, and he expects to be ready for training camp. The goaltender was initially injured in a Jan. 22 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning, but returned on March 12, where he appeared to aggravate the injury, and hasn’t played since. Hill, however, had a solid season when he was healthy, posting a .906 save percentage and a 2.66 goals-against average in 25 games.
  • Defender Erik Karlsson declined to share exactly what was the injury that kept him out of training the last two weeks of the season, but made it clear that the injury was relatively minor and mentioned that if the Sharks had been in contention , it could even have been something he would play through (link). The veteran has struggled with injuries this season, missing almost two months between January and March and last playing on April 14. In other positive injury news, Karlsson said he’s not sure if he’ll be competing at the World Championships, but the fact that he’s looking at it in some way also shows the relative extent of the problem. wound. In 50 games this season, the 31-year-old has registered 10 goals and 25 assists.

Since the inception of Rich States, Poor States, Utah’s economic outlook has been ranked number one on the index every year. This year, North Carolina prospects received the second-highest ranking. Both Utah and North Carolina adopted conservative tax policies that reduced tax rates and kept them low. North Carolina, especially in recent years, has been the gold standard for other states to reap the benefits of an improved economy by controlling spending and lowering tax rates.

Beginning in 2013, North Carolina implemented several rounds of significant tax cuts. Last year, its legislature reduced the flat personal income tax rate to 4.99% and the rate will continue to be lowered until it reaches 3.99% in 2027. The tax rate 2.5% corporate tax will be entirely eliminated by 2030. As a result of these types of tax reforms, North Carolina has significantly improved its rankings in both rich and poor states over the past decade.

In 2012, the index ranked North Carolina 23rd in terms of economic prospects. That same year, Iowa was ranked 22 in the economic outlook. Since then, North Carolina has steadily climbed the rankings while Iowa now sits at 32. North Carolina has had a tremendous turnaround due to tax reform.

Interestingly, Iowa didn’t slip in the rankings because we splurged or raised tax rates. On the contrary, Iowa essentially stood still while North Carolina and other states gradually embarked on the path of pro-growth reforms. In a competitive economy, the status quo is not enough.

The good news for Iowans is that our state is no longer standing still. In fact, Iowa sparked a tax reform movement this year, continuing a recent trend. Since 2018, Governor Kim Reynolds and the Legislature have enacted three rounds of tax cuts that have reduced personal and corporate tax rates. In addition, the legislator has abolished inheritance tax, which will soon be completely abolished. By 2026, Iowa will have a flat income tax of 3.9% and corporate income tax will be slowly reduced to a flat rate of 5.5%.

When fully implemented, Iowa’s improved tax code will almost certainly lead to higher rankings in both rich state and poor state rankings. Governor Reynolds and the Legislature understand that Iowa is in economic competition with other states and that more and more people are reacting to tax rates by voting with their feet. This is one of the reasons they passed such a sweeping tax reform measure this year.

However, even with Iowa’s recent progress, policymakers need to think about what’s next. Other states are also enacting significant tax reforms, and they will continue to do so. As an example, Missouri is considering legislation that would not only further reduce its personal income tax rates, but also eliminate corporate income tax by 2023. According to the ranking of this year, Iowa sits squarely in the middle of our neighboring states, a reminder that appeasement is not an option.

Finally, Rich States, Poor States is another notice that Iowans are suffering from a heavy property tax burden, hitting 38 this year. High property taxes not only hurt taxpayers, they also discourage economic growth. Iowa taxpayers demand a political solution for high property taxes. A priority for the 2023 legislative session should be the enactment of a strong property tax reform measure on Truth in Taxation that will finally deliver relief.

Iowa and North Carolina had nearly identical prospects a decade ago. Since then, North Carolina has rightly been called the gold standard for tax reform. It won’t be long before people across the country are talking about Iowa’s reform story in the same way.

John Hendrickson is Policy Director of the Iowans for Tax Relief Foundation

EXPLAINER: Will a Russian prisoner exchange have an impact on Griner? | professional sports https://coachouletbtf.com/explainer-will-a-russian-prisoner-exchange-have-an-impact-on-griner-professional-sports/ Thu, 28 Apr 2022 00:50:00 +0000 https://coachouletbtf.com/explainer-will-a-russian-prisoner-exchange-have-an-impact-on-griner-professional-sports/ Brittney Griner remains in custody in Russia and it’s unclear how an unexpected prisoner exchange between the United States and Russia that freed Navy veteran Trevor Reed on Wednesday will affect the WNBA star’s status. Brittney Griner remains in custody in Russia and it’s unclear how an unexpected prisoner exchange between the United States and Russia that freed Navy veteran Trevor Reed on Wednesday will affect the WNBA star’s status.

Griner has been detained in Russia since mid-February.

the agreement announced by the United States and Russia involving Reed, an American imprisoned for nearly three years, would have been a notable diplomatic maneuver even in peacetime. It was all the more surprising given that it was done as Russia’s war with Ukraine drove relations with the United States to their lowest point in decades.

Griner, a two-time Olympic gold medalist who plays for the WNBA Phoenix Mercury, was arrested in Russia for alleged possession of a cannabis derivative legal in much of the world. The offense can mean up to 10 years in prison. Experts have predicted the two-time Olympic gold medalist could get significantly less if found guilty.

To like many top WNBA players, Griner plays overseas to supplement his income. She was returning to the country after the Russian League, in which she also plays, paused for the FIBA World Cup Qualifying Tournament.

What does prisoner exchange mean?

It’s unclear if Reed’s release will affect Griner’s case. It seems unlikely to have an immediate impact, in part because the administration has played down the idea of a broader rapprochement with Moscow at a time when Russia is at war with Ukraine.

Is Griner’s case similar?

Moreover, Griner’s case is at a very different status from that of Reed, who had been found guilty by a Russian court and sentenced to nine years in prison. Griner’s case, on the other hand, has yet to make it through the Russian court system, with the evidence and facts still unclear.

The United States had found that Reed and another American corporate security official from Michigan, Paul Whelan, had been wrongfully detained by Russia and had pressured Moscow to release them. US officials have yet to make a similar decision about Griner, which means their role – at least overtly – is generally limited to ensuring she has access to consular services when behind. bars.

The 6ft 9in Griner is being held in a detention center near Moscow. She meets regularly with her lawyers and met with a US embassy official last month to check on her condition.

State Department spokesman Ned Price said last month that Griner appeared “to be in good shape.” Price did not identify the official who had obtained consular access to Griner.

Griner had his detention extended until May 19. More information about his case could then emerge. But regardless of the factual allegations against her in court, it is impossible to disentangle the legal case from the wider political implications.

In some cases, US officials speak loudly when they are convinced an American has been wrongfully detained. But Griner’s case is barely two months old, and authorities have yet to make that determination. A State Department office that works to free American hostages and wrongful detainees is not known to be involved.
